Live Vs Cured Vs Distillate
What is a Live Concentrate?
A live concentrate is an extract that is made from flower that is fresh frozen, immediately after harvest to preserve cannabinoids, terpenes, and all compounds in their natural state.
Live resins often yield less, but have higher concentrations of primary terpenes which often translates into a more flavorful and balanced product.
What is a Cured Concentrate?
A cured concentrate is an extract that is made from flower that has been dried and cured, prior to extraction.
Cured resins often have higher yields, but lower primary terpene content. During the drying process, some of the less stable terps are lost.
What is Distillate?
The process of making distillate involves extracting compounds from the plant material using a solvent like C02, winterizing the collected oil, and filtering it. The oil then passes through stages of evaporation, decarboxylation, and finally distillation. This process is designed to isolate the THC content of the extract. This results in a concentrated oil, often around 80-93% THC, with little to no terpenes due to the temperatures reached during this process. Due to the lack of terpenes, botanical or cannabis derived terps are added back to the oil to improve the viscosity for use in carts, disposables, etc.
Patients often ask, “which one is better?”
At the end of the day, it comes down to personal preference and your budget.
Live Resin and Cured Resin are both great options for dabbing and carts/disposables.
In our opinion, Live Resin is a higher quality and more beneficial extract. It contains a wider range of terpenes which often results in a better flavor profile, a more balanced effect and overall better experience.
Cured Resin is comparable to Live Resin, but often lacks a more complex terpene profile. This can result in a less flavorful and sometimes duller effect when compared to live resin.
Distillate is generally a budget friendly option, that many patients turn to for a discrete vaping option. Due to the lack of strain specific terpenes found in most distillates, it often lacks a well-balanced effect, resulting in a shorter duration of benefits.
