MSO’s, OCP, METRC and out of state money are once again putting pressure on the Maine Medical Cannabis community by trying to force METRC Track and Trace and costly mandatory testing. This attempt to overthrow and take control of our medical program comes after State Rep. Graham and State Rep. Malon continue to push for LD 1847 An Act to Institute Testing and Tracking of Medical Use Cannabis and Cannabis Products Similar to Adult Use Cannabis and Cannabis Products.
LD1847 has received over 600 testimonies against the proposed bill, yet this bill continues to be pushed for under the false guise of “patient and public safety”. When in reality this is an attempt to help MSO’s and larger operators overtake the medical industry by forcing unsustainable fees, costs and burdensome security measures that small mom and pop companies cannot afford. This is a clear and deliberate attempt to crush the small businesses across the state of Maine, that have helped to build the very same industry that these individuals seek to crush.
In a document presented to The Brookings Institution titled “Worry about bad marijuana—not Big Marijuana”, Director of OCP, John Hudak states, “And, again, it is easier for state regulatory bodies to monitor fewer, large businesses than numerous smaller ones.”.
This quote is telling and confirms exactly what this bill proposes to do. Both Representative Anne Graham and Representative Marc Malon, have on multiple occasions said that they do not wish to see any small businesses shut down or negatively impacted by this bill. However, that couldn’t be further from the truth. This bill will be the reason that many, some estimate in the hundreds, of small businesses to close their doors.
So, it is again up to the patients, caregivers, and other medical operators to come together and push back against bad policies that were not called on for any reason other than market capture through regulatory capture at the state level that would effectively push small businesses out.
